Today’s Take Back The Night 2013.

Take Back the Night (also known as Reclaim the Night) is an internationally held march and rally intended as a protest and direct action against rape and other forms of sexual violence.

Today’s events at SJSU include:

Flash Mob at 7th Street Plaza
Run, Hide, Fight: Active Shooter Training at CVB RAC
See Something, Say Something. Empowered Bystander Training at CVB RAC
Undie Run starting at Campus Villiage Quad
Resource Fair at CVB RAC
Survivors Speak Out at CVB RAC
Candle Light Vigil and March

SJSU’s Peer Health Educators have come together with many different organizations on campus to bring you a bunch of events for healing, empowerment, and remembrance of those of whom we know or don’t know that have been raped or victims of sexual violence, including survivors of rape and sexual violence.

At least one out of every three women WORLDWIDE has been beaten, forced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime by a partner, relative, friend, stranger, employer, and/or colleague.1 Of these crimes, less than 50% are reported to the police.2 It’s time to make a change.

It’s becoming increasingly clear to me that, though I didn’t think about this at the time, I probably started a blog because I need somewhere to vent my boundless rage that is not random people’s Facebook walls. I mean, one thing among the many thousands of things that are guaranteed to raise my blood pressure is when folks get all “the internet isn’t real, and it’s not a viable platform for communication,” but also like, Facebook fights are dumb, I’m supposed to be an adult now.

HRC is an organization run by rich white men. They have consistently chosen not to support trans rights. They have consistently silenced POC organizations and organizers. They have accepted donations from, and even honored, multi-billionaire corporations who have done more than their fair share to contribute to the unequal distribution of wealth and to systematic racialized and gendered oppression in the US. Their vision of “equality”—as obviously signaled by their logo—is not, and never has been, equality for all.

Lately there has been some distressing news, one component is anti-gay statement(s) [“God Hates Fags”] from former 90’s queer muse / musician, Michelle Shocked, that can lead to very life-threatening situations in the near future.

Hatred and homophobia can never be underestimated. And the effect of someone saying “God hates fags” can never be underestimated either. It’s a license to kill. It’s a death sentence. It’s not funny. It’s not OK. It’s not something I can let go easily, because I know what it truly means.

Gay Wedding Is Embraced by Disney in Tokyo

Koyuki Higashi and her partner of one and a half years tied the knot in front of 30 well-wishers on Friday, but much more of the country was in on the celebration, the first same-sex wedding at the theme park here.

Ms. Higashi, a stage actress turned gay rights activist, and her partner, Hiroko, who has not revealed her full name, posted frequent social media updates of their wedding plans and from their Christian-style ceremony, with a romantic gondola ride.

“My partner Hiroko and I just held a gay wedding at the Tokyo Disney Resort. Even Mickey and Minnie are here to celebrate with us!” Ms. Higashi, 28, wrote in a Twitter post that also had a picture of the newlyweds posing with the big-eared Disney characters and a flower-festooned cake. Her entry was reposted more than 6,000 times, drawing largely positive responses.

U.S. Senate Confirms First Gay Asian-American Woman to Federal Bench:

In a voice vote, the Senate today confirmed Pamela Ki Mai Chen, a Brooklyn prosecutor, to the federal bench for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Chen is the first openly gay Asian American on the federal bench.

Congratulations MARK TAKANO and the 5 other Asian Americans elected to Congress this year!

Takano is the first gay person of color to enter the US House, and will be representing the folks in CD 41 of California.

Takano Japanese-American family was interned in camps during WWII. He taught in public schools for 23 years and has a degree from Harvard.
